GENERAL INFORMATION
The most important systems of biological treatment of the effluent from primary sedimentation tanks are based on the reproduction of natural biochemical phenomena. Biological treatment is the technique to obtain these phenomena in a restricted place, instead of as in nature, extensively, and in a very shorter time. In the trickling filter are obtained the same transformation processes that happen in a natural ground, but, for the same amount of sewage, in a smaller space.
A trickling filter consists of a fixed bed of various materials (rocks, plastic media, etc.) over which sewage or other wastewater flows downward and causes a layer of microbial slime to grow, covering the bed of media. Aerobic conditions are maintained by splashing, diffusion, and either by forced air flowing through the bed or natural convection of air if the filter medium is porous.
